Study & Learning Techniques Course

The Study & Learning Techniques Workshop is designed to teach students how to: 

  • organize binders & materials

  • manage time wisely

  • use paper planners & web-based tools to record short and long-term assignments

  • check email regularly

  • communicate with teachers

  • prepare for upcoming deadlines

  • take efficient notes from a lecture and textbook

  • engage & sustain attention while studying

  • manage digital learning devices

  • navigate remote learning

  • learn how to study efficiently and effectively for different types of tests

  • develop a personal study plan to be shared with parents on the last day of the course

6th & 7th Grade Crash Course
 

*Prep strategies for students starting Middle School or Junior High

This 10-hour course is designed specifically to help prepare your child for his or her transition to junior high school. This hands-on, super practical workshop is focused on making sure the start of school goes well and they are ready for all of the academic and organizational changes ahead. Students will: 

  • Learn multiple systems for keeping up with their materials & binders based on the school they attend.

  • Practice keeping a planner and learning why they need a physical life & academic planner instead of just the online websites

  • Discuss the new expectations for homework and how much time should be spent studying or working every night.

  • Learn how to use paper-based and digital tools to record assignments, set reminders, submit digital work, and track late or missing assignments. 

  • Learn methods for checking email regularly, how to respond promptly & how to write appropriate emails to their teachers

  • Identify appropriate study environments including discussions about music, tv, and social media during studying.

  • Make a plan for using lockers, changing classes, bringing the right books home, turning in work on time, and managing their homework

  • Learn how grades are calculated and why homework matters

  • Learn over 25 strategies for how to study differently and effectively for different types of tests

  • Identify 15 different techniques or practices to help manage stress and overwhelm 

  • Develop a personal study plan to be shared with parents on the last day of the course

Jellycat Birthday Party

We are celebrating Jellycat's 25th Birthday with a summer camp! Bring one of your favorite Jellycats each day as we will create clothing, accessories, living environments and food for our friends. Students will design their own jellycat and learn how to write stories about his/her adventures. Students will also be in charge of planning a birthday party for all the Jellycats on the last day of the camp!

Turn Trash Into Treasure

Spend a week learning how everyday items are built by breaking items apart and looking inside at how they work. A camp created for those who love to investigate, explore, and learn how things work. We will use the pieces of trash and turn them into treasure throughout the week! Perfect for the creative minds and future engineers.

Project History

Spend a week researching and investigating a specific period in time in history of your choosing. Do you want to learn more about World War 1, the Civil War, the Reformation, Egyptians, or the American Colonies? Pick a time period and enjoy learning how to read, research, & write about what you discover. This camp is created for those who love to history and want to improve their research and writing skills. Students will create art pieces and fun projects throughout the week!

Learn how to build your own robot as you learn about how robotics work! This camp is focused on learning logic, sequencing, and how to build a simple robot. Campers get to take their robot home with them at the end of the week!

Elementary Math Skills Review: Rising 5th & 6th Graders 

 

A two-hour class offered three different times throughout the summer for rising 5th & 6th graders who need to review key math facts (math fact fluency, multiplication, division) and review key mathematical procedures to prepare them for the upcoming year. This class is designed to be a fun way to refresh math skills before the year begins.

Creative Writing Course
 

This workshop is designed to help develop students' creative writing. Students will learn how to craft a story arc, generate captivating introductions, develop character profiles, and express their ideas fluently and clearly in their writing.

**Students can register for one-on-one instruction for this course and parents can pick their own dates and put together their own small group of friends. Virtual options are available as well.

High School: Writing Academic Essays with Evidence

​

This workshop is designed to help students develop and fine-tune their skills in writing academic essays using evidence from various sources. This course will cover various types of academic essays and themes required in high school, such as explication, research, and analysis (theme, symbol, and character-based). Students will learn how to construct an outline template that will be useful for future essays and theme assignments.

 

Students will go over each step in the drafting and writing process:

  • brainstorming

  • thesis constructing

  • outlining

  • finding evidence to support each claim 

  • identifying relevant supporting details 

  • writing a draft

  • using academic language & transition words

  • revising the essay

High School Grammar Course
(Great for ACT English section Prep also)

The Grammar Course is designed to teach students the key concepts and grammar rules necessary for high school and standardized tests like the ACT and SAT. This class is appropriate for rising 9th -12th graders.

​

This class is perfect for students trying to raise their scores on the English or Writing portion of the

ACT and SAT. 

​

Students will learn grammar concepts & rules for:

  • identifying the parts of speech    

  • comma rules

  • using colons, semi-colons, and dashes

  • subject verb agreement 

  • parallelism 

  • appositives 

  • idioms

  • using transition words appropriately 

  • wordiness & redundancy
